The Fundamentals of Psychoanalysis
A Course with Case Discussions, led by Thomas Svolos and Pamela Jespersen
Immanuel Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska
2009-2010
In 1964, Jacques Lacan had been practicing as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst for thirty years and was the leading psychoanalyst and teacher of psychoanalysis in France. For ten years, however, there was a dispute within the psychoanalytic community of France, which–we might say–Lacan settled in founding his School of Psychoanalysis in Paris in June of 1964. This School was the first of now nine Schools of the World Association of Psychoanalysis spread throughout the globe.
At that very moment, from January through June of 1964, Jacques Lacan delivered a Seminar at the École pratique des Hautes Études on the fundamental of psychoanalysis. While Lacan had been teaching in his Seminar for twelve years, his prior teaching was in a smaller setting to a group of dedicated psychoanalysts and students of psychoanalysis. His Seminar in 1964 was delivered at one of the most important Schools in Paris to a broad audience of not only psychoanalysts and other clinicians, but also philosophers and linguists and students. Hundreds attended his teaching.
For the new setting, Lacan chose to address fundamentals of psychoanalysis. His teaching, published as The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis « drills down », as we say, to the key aspects of the psychoanalytic experience.
For the 2009-10 academic year, we will present a course on the fundamentals of psychoanalysis as articulated by Lacan in his Seminar, with reference to clinical cases to be presented throughout the year. Thomas Svolos and Pamela Jespersen will present talks and lead discussions on the concepts of Lacan and discuss the cases presented.
Participants are encouraged to read The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psycho-Analysis by Jacques Lacan (Norton). For participants less familiar with Lacanian psychoanalysis or this text, we encourage you to also read Reading Seminar XI: Lacan’s Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis (edited by Richard Feldstein, Bruce Fink, and Maire Jaanus–SUNY Press).
This course will be delivered on Thursdays, from 1200-100, at the Alegent Psychiatric Associates first floor conference room in the Ike Freidman Building on the Immanuel Medical Center campus. Continuing Education Credits for LMHP, PhD, and MD will be available.
The course is limited to clinicians with privileges at Alegent Health facilities.
