NEL MIAMI Saturday, May 05, 2012 « ENCORE, ENCORE, KNOWLEDGE, LOVE AND WOMAN » (6 CEU) By Thomas Svolos, MD Psychoanalyst and psychiatrist practicing in Omaha, Nebraska. He is a member of the World Association of Psychoanalysis and the New Lacanian School. He also serves on the Council of Lacanian Compass. Dr. Svolos is an Adjunct Professor and Acting Chair of Psychiatry at the Creighton University School of Medicine. He has published numerous articles, his work has appeared in nine languages, and he has co-authored and co-edited Lacan and Addiction, published in 2011 by Karnac Books. ===================================================================================== Over the last several years, we have greeted the release of so many of Lacan’s Seminars in definitive versions in French and Spanish with great excitement. Seminar XX, Encore (1972-73), was one of the first Seminars released in French, and we have had a definitive English translation for over ten years. It is one of Lacan’s most beautiful Seminars, filled with elegant and concise formulations. In this Seminar, considered the beginning of his late teachings, we will explore the new relationship Lacan presents between language and the libido (the Symbolic and the Real); a change in the role of the function of the Father, especially with regard to the Feminine; a different valuation of Truth and Knowledge, and a perspective of Love. All of these changes in Lacan’s teaching must be understood, however, in terms of a response to impasses in the psychoanalytic treatment itself: what is the end of a psychoanalysis? Not only a deciphering of the Unconscious first described by Freud, but something else—which Lacan will articulate with the novel formulations of this seminar. Vignettes and clinical cases will be discussed.
