Wilson is the Thomas H. Pritchard Professor of English and Chair of the English Department at Wake Forest University. His most recent book is Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, published this month by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. This book is an examination of the contemporary American over-pursuit of happiness in various domains. He discusses the so-called epidemic of depression in the United States and his concerns that overmedication of moods may have deleterious effects on the spirit. The book also examines the role of melancholy in the human experience, with special attention on its importance in the creative process of writers and artists. The book has received considerable attention in the popular press, with reviews already appearing in the Economist and Newsweek, and Wilson was interviewed on NPR about the book. For more information on the book, please see his recent piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education at the link below.
Eric Wilson will also deliver a Creighton University Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds lecture on Wednesday, May 21, at 11:00.
Both events are open to the public.
