Following the screening, there was a panel discussion of the film. Opening remarks were made by Kathy Hankins, an Alegent Psychiatrist who was also an organizer of the event. Several members of CLOO provided different perspectives on the movie. Pam Jespersen spoke of the place of love in the movie. Gary Marshall offered observations on psychic structure and the relation of the character Lars to his family and community. Thomas Svolos noted the movement of Lars’ psychic position from inhibition to symptom to anguish over the course of the movie, and noted the distinction between the psychoanalytic and the psychiatric symptom that the movie demonstrated.
The Collaborating Commons at UNO provided a fine venue for the screening and discussion. The event was well attended, and many participants have requested that this become a regular event.
